Happy NewYear Hornets - here is an update on
the 50th reunion plans
First, we have a new web site. Thanks to the
outstanding work done by Gus McCutchen over
the past 10 years, we have a first rate
site. The new URL is
www.hhs57.org.
The user name and password are the same as
before, when Gus was the web creator and
webmaster: class57 and 1hornet.
The look and pages are the same as before,
when Gus was webmaster. Thanks so much,
Gus, from all of us.
Please take a look at the 'missing
classmate' list attached. It is also on the
web. One of our top priorities over the
next several months is to locate folks and
get them on the e mail list or the US mail
list. We are in touch with about
320 classmates, but there are a couple
hundred still missing. Any help you can
supply here will be invaluable to us.
Additions or changes should be sent to
webmaster@www.hhs57.org. Instructions
are on the site. Or you can e mail
prubincam@cox.net.
REMINDER: the dates are September
21-23, 2007. Put these on your
calendars and start a reunion fund right
now, so you can be sure to be there. What
will you need for that fund? Unless
something really unexpected comes along, we
are planning a fee of $107 per person. That
is $57 for our year, plus $50 for the number
of the reunion. Is your reunion committee
clever, or what? (We really do have a
budget, it is pure coincidence that it came
out to that amount).
That
will include everything - the hospitality
Friday afternoon and evening, the banquet
Saturday night and the Sunday picnic.
Everything but the hotel room. For you
out-of-towners, and locals who want to
splurge, the Marriott has offered a group
rate of $89 per night, plus tax. The
Marriott was selected because their
facilities are perfect for our needs, they
have a new face lift, and their cost is
reasonable. You are sure to like the
venue. For out-of-towners, we will be
exploring possible discount airline fares to
Albuquerque and will let you know about that
later.
The
steering committee, Pam Dempsey, Ann James
Paden and Paul Rubincam, have enlisted some
loyal and hardworking classmates to fill out
the reunion committee. Joining Ken Zaring,
who will ramrod the faculty contacts, are
Pat Dadian, Shelby Smith Sinclare, Nancy
Robinson Johnson, Connie Chalamidas, JoAnn
Trombley Kennedy and Beverly Wilkins
Williams. We can always use more help,
though, so let us know if you are willing.
You
can look for registration materials and lots
more details in early May. And we may be
contacting you again before then. In the
meantime, help us find those missing
Hornets.

MARRIOTT, HERE WE
COME
Your reunion
committee has scheduled September 21-23 (Friday –
Sunday) as the dates for Highland High School
Class of 1957 50th Reunion.
We want all classmates and your guests to
participate. We promise to make
our landmark 50th a party to
remember.
The
Albuquerque Marriott on Louisiana NE was selected
after receiving your votes, assessing the costs
for each location considered, and picking the
facility most compatible with our needs – to be
able to get together in a relaxing and intimate
surrounding – and at a reasonable price for us
all.
You will
surely agree that the hotel provides a wonderful
venue for our Saturday evening party, plus, it has
some very recent remodeling and a nearly perfect
set up for an informal get-together Friday
afternoon and evening for early arrivals. We will
have the traditional Sunday picnic, as
well.
Over the next
months, activities and outings will be arranged as
there is demand for such things.
Those who want to come early, or stay
after, can really enjoy the New Mexico weather –
always good in the fall – and the environs as well
as the reunion. Your committee
will send registration information early next
year, and in the meantime, if you have comments or
suggestions, or want to volunteer to help on
the committee, let us hear from
you. Just e mail Ann James at
AnnPaden11@msn.com, Pam Dempsey at
ABQPam@aol.com
or Paul Rubincam at prubincam@cox.net.
Please check the ‘57
website for the listings of “missing” classmates
and tell us if you know how to reach any of
them. Also look at the
Directory there and help us update it with any
changes that are appropriate.
Send your changes to
webmaster@HHS57.org
Here are the
links to the site. Gus has recently given you the
password to go
on.

Reunion Reminder
|
July 2007
Hello Hornets
If you have already registered with Pam
Dempsey, but have not reserved a room at
the Albuquerque Marriott, you should
make that reservation right away. They
have set aside only a certain number of
rooms with that great rate for our
group, so you don't want to miss out.
Go to
www.marriott.com/abqnm or call
1-800-334-2086. Be sure to use the
group code
HIGHIGA.
If you have not yet registered, go to
the web site
www.hhs57.org, user name
class57, password
1hornet, and retrieve
the registration package. Send your
forms and a check to Pam, as shown in
the material. You can cancel up until
September 7th for the reunion weekend
September 21-23, and get your money
back, but we don't want you to cancel.
You would be sorry....
If you have done all of those things,
great - we will see you
in September. It will be a reunion to
remember, we promise!!
Questions? Let us know

Reunion Final Reminder
Great News!
Both the
Journal and
Tribune ran articles December 11th
announcing the four who will be taken into the
35th Annual Abq./New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame
March 5th at 7p.m. at Hotel Albuquerque.
Two are from our class!
Linda Estes and
Buddy Robertson will be inducted
along with Nancy Lopez Knight (golf pro) and
Susan Vigil Maceachen (also HHS grad. who won a
national 800 meters title in 1979 as a Lobo). A
couple quotes from the articles:
"Linda Estes, women's athletics director and
senior associate AD at UNM from
1973-2000....fought vigorously for gender
equality in sports, helping to merge women's
college sports into the NCAA. Susan Maceachen
said,'In the long run, I think she is going to
be one of the most appreciated administrators at
UNM.' "
"Buddy Robertson, an all-Skyline Conference
catcher for UNM in the 50's and later a coach at
Belen and Valley high schools, saw
interscholastic sports opportunities for girls
grow exponentially while working for APS [25
years as athletic administrator].... APS
athletic director Ken Barrras said,'He had the
foresight, long before his time, to start
addressing things that we take for granted
today.' "
Tickets for the banquet are $40; they'll go on
sale in Jan. at UNM athletic ticket office.
If you won't be able to attend, we know Linda
and Buddy would really appreciate a Hornet Hug
via phone call, card or email. Thanks to our
wonderful web site for providing their info:

Reunion DVD
Dear '57 Classmate
The DVD of the reunion activities is on the
way. It is in production and will probably be
in your mailbox within a few weeks. We
appreciate your patience, but promise you that
the wait will be worth it.
When I first e mailed you with our initial plans
for the reunion - nearly a year ago - I told you
that Nancy Robinson Johnson and her family's
company offered to memorialize what took place
with a professional grade DVD, and I told you
then that this computerized condensation of our
three wonderful days would be one of the
highlights of the reunion experience. When you
get your copy, and view it, you will doubtless
agree that was a gross understatement.
We on the steering committee have seen a preview
of the final version (one of the perks of the
job) and it is a
magnificent work of art!Nancy and
Charles, and their family, have created an award
winning combination of old photos and new ones,
videos of the main events and interviews with
you and your classmates, and music and narration
that makes you feel like you are experiencing it
all over again.
You will want to see it over and over - and if
you do not have a DVD player, you need to buy,
borrow or steal one, because you do not want to
miss this. And THANKS to the Johnsons for
making it possible. Nancy's address, phone
number and e mail are on the class web site if
you wish to give her your impressions, and we
hope you do.

Update
No. 2 E-mail dated 5/1/06 message
from Paul Rubincam dated 5/1/06 Subject:
Reunion Planning - Choice of Venue
The HHS Reunion planning
committee has considered a number of possible locations
for the September 2007 “Big 50th.” We have
narrowed the possibilities to four, each of which has
many good things to offer. We now would like to get a
sense of which of these venues class members would
prefer. Some of the features of each and approximate
room rates and banquet costs are indicated. Please note
that these are not inclusive costs for the entire
weekend. That information will be coming to you later
as we proceed with planning for such things as a memory
book, music for the Saturday night event, and the
traditional Sunday picnic.
The choices are
numbered – 1 – 4. Please respond to this e mail with
the number of your choice, plus, of course, any comments
you want the Reunion
committee to hear.
1.
Albuquerque Marriott
The Albuquerque Marriott is
familiar to those who attended the 40th
Reunion, but with some quality
renovations, especially in the guest rooms, many of
which have spectacular mountain views, and in the
addition of an inviting indoor-outdoor pool and exercise
facilities. The hotel is located in Uptown, near the
I-40 exit and the Coronado and Winrock malls. The costs
are comparable to other in-town venues, with rooms in
the $110-plus-taxes range, and buffet dinner in the
range of $70-plus per person, including taxes and
gratuities. The hospitality staff is especially well
organized and accommodating for events like ours.
2. Hotel Albuquerque at
Old
Town
The Hotel Albuquerque is
the former
Sheraton
Old
Town, now
under local management and redone with a fresh
territorial/ Santa Fe-style décor. The facility
includes three restaurants and a piano lounge and bar.
The historic
Old
Town area is
central to the larger family entertainment district that
now includes the Albuquerque BioPark and Aquarium, the
reconstructed Rio Grande
Beach, and
the several
Albuquerque
museums. Costs are in the range of $120 for a double
room to $150 for a suite, plus taxes; and buffet dinner
in the range of $60-plus, including taxes and
gratuities. Proximity to the attractions of
Old
Town and
environs is a definite plus.
3.
Sandia Resort and Casino
If you have been reading
travel and airline magazines you will have seen the ads
for the beautiful new Sandia Resort and Casino.
Located on pristine Indian land at the foot of the
10,700 foot Sandia Crest, the views from the hotel are
spectacular in every direction. A complete destination
resort, the facility includes a challenging golf course,
a casino with Las Vegas
style gambling, state of the art spa and heated pool and
pool bar, plus two fine restaurants. The facility is
located about ten miles from downtown
Albuquerque,
off Tramway Boulevard.
They will give us a group rate for rooms, bringing top
of the line rooms into the $160 plus taxes range. The
banquet buffet with a range of menus is a bargain at
under $45 including tax and gratuities.
4.
Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa
Tamaya is a first-class,
four-star destination hotel, resort, and conference
center located on some 500 acres of protected Santa Ana
Pueblo land, about 20 miles north of Albuquerque, on the
way to Santa Fe. In addition to spectacular views of
the Tuyuna and Sandia mountains, amenities include an
18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts,
stables, three heated pools, a health club and spa, and
shuttle service to the nearby Santa Ana Casino. Room
costs including a resort fee are in the range of $240
plus taxes; buffet dinner could be in the range of
$100-plus per person including taxes and gratuities. A
visit to Tamaya is a memorable experience, and those who
have stayed there agree that you do get what you pay
for.
Again, please respond to this e mail with the number of
your choice
Paul
Rubincam and the Reunion Planning
Committee – Ann James Paden, Pam Dempsey, Gus McCutchen
and Ken Zaring.
Update No. 1
1/9/06
Greetings
Classmate - we are starting to plan for our 50th reunion
of the class of 1957 from Highland High. Can you
believe that, 50 years? We want to have a party to
remember, and to include everyone who wants to come.
The general sentiment we have been able to elicit so
far is that we should definitely have it in Albuquerque,
and the reunion committee has begun to explore possible
venues. We are sending this e-mail to the most recent
one we have for you, and we hope it reaches you. If it
does, please check the information shown for you in the
Class Directory.
If the information we now have in the Directory is not
correct, please respond to
webmaster@HHS57.org
with your current information - name, mailing address,
phone number with area code, spouse name and e-mail
address if you prefer another. We would also be
delighted if you could tell us about any
Missing Classmates
and any additions we need to make on the
Memorial Page for whom we have no information. We
also need current information on our
teachers.
Paul Rubincam has volunteered to take the lead for our
reunion planning. Ann James-Paden and Pam Dempsey have
volunteered to be local contacts and are working closely
with Paul. As soon as we get an updated list of e-mail
addresses, Paul will develop a class mailing list so he
can communicate with you directly. In the meantime, if
you have comments on the above, please respond to the
Reunion Planning
Committee
.Because of the problem with SPAM and junk mail it would
help a lot if you use HHS'57 at the start of the Subject
line in your correspondence with the Reunion Planning
Committee. That will help us insure that your messages
aren't inadvertently deleted.
If you have comments or
suggestions about this page, please e-mail
